5 Steps To Excel The Art Of Cabinet Refinishing

Cabinet refinishing is an inexpensive way to give any home a major makeover. But we need to be conscious about the preparation process, if we really care about our customer’s satisfaction. While it may be tempting to rush through or even skip this process, we need to understand that preparation is extremely important if we want our finish to look good and last a long time. We need to be very careful while refinishing a cabinet. We just can’t compromise with the material we are using. Using material of low quality will never give the desired look. We need to take care of each and every minor detail.

Let’s go through the best practices for cabinet refinishing , from prep to paint, so you can get a picture perfect and professional finish.

Step 1: SVT (Sand, Vac and Tack)

1. Sand the cabinets with medium-grit sanding sponges.
2. After that use a shop vac with a brush attachment to remove the majority of the dust.
3. The last step is to tack-rag off the residual dust.

Step 2: It’s a Primer Time!

Choosing the correct primer is of utmost importance. Wrong primer can lead to various issues like chipping cabinets, an uneven finish and stain bleeding from the wood. It is important to use a primer that adheres wonderfully and blocks stains. Use a primer that dries up in 30 minutes and can be top-coated in an hour to achieve a dust free finish. Do make sure to use a low odor primer so that family members can work in this space without any issue. Once you’re done with primer, don’t forget to repeat SVT.

Step 3: Top it off

Now it’s time to top coat the perfectly primed surface.

1. Use a high quality brush or roller.
2. Do ensure smooth and even coverage.
3. Coat the back sides of the door and lay them flat.
4. Once dry, flip the doors and coat the fronts.
5. For cabinet boxes, try to keep a wet edge.
6. Apply a double top coat to enhance the shine.

Step 4: Installation time

Once everything has dried to the point where you can handle it, start removing the tape and plastic from the cabinets. Install the doors and by one and save any adjustments for the end. Try to use your hands rather than drills as they tend to strip out delicate.

Step 5: Final look

Take one final walk-through to look for touch-ups. Make sure that the clients fall in love with the finish.
